For Sale: 1997 Toyota Hiace Super Custom "Club Field"

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Seller: Larsreber@me.com

Miles: 70,700

Price $18,500

This Hiace has been a daily driver the past couple years. It's a right hand drive with full time 4wd. It's got a peppy little turbo diesel engine (3.0L 1KZ-TE) with low mileage on it. This has been an incredibly reliable car for me that hasn't had any issues with it.

Work done on the van since imported:

New timing belt, pulleys, water pump, brakes, 2 inch Roamer lift with Falken AT tires, AC belt replaced, radiator flushed, EGR delete, and regular oil changes as needed.

These are great little vans that a lot of people are converting to camper vans or just driving as is. There is very minimal rust for a 26 year old vehicle and the interior is very clean. There is a small crack on the windshield but no work is needed that I’m aware of.

Fulltime 4wd

1KZ-TE Turbo Diesel

These are among the most coveted styles of Hiaces coming over from Japan and can sell in the $30-35k range. This one has very low miles, drives smooth and looks awesome. It’s been serviced by a local mechanic including , air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, EGR delete, hoses, alternator, new deep cycle battery for camper equipment, fluids flushed and topped off, a 2 inch lift, Tacoma 16’ wheels and AT tires. This van was purchased from a dealership in Japan that sold it road trip ready, but all these updates have been made just to ensure it’s in top shape for the next owner.

Has seatbelts for 5, sleeps 2 adults by laying the seats flat. There is a working fridge (battery, propane, shore power) , Mikunu diesel heater, curtains, plenty of cupboards for storage, a sink with water pump and water tanks, shore power hookup, TV, power windows, auto transmission, 2’ Tugmaster receiver, remote start, and more. The window tint is in good shape and has an Omnistor awning.

Overall this is a very clean Hiace, drives smooth and comfortable at 70-75 mhp and so far has had no overheating problems.

Downside… the paint job is not factory and I have discovered some rust under the paint. The price has been significantly reduced to allow the new owner to have the rust repaired when it’s needed.

SOLD - 1995 Toyota Hiace Living Saloon EX Super Custom 4x4

This Hiace is in excellent condition and only 90,000 miles on it. The 1KZ Hiace models are the best vans for driving US speeds. It cruises comfortably at the 70-75mpg range and gets around 20-25 miles per gallon. The exterior is in great shape and the interior is like new. There is minor rust and corrosion on the van, it looks and drives smooth.

The Living Saloon EX package is the next step down from the top Hiace package – it’s a balance of comfort and functionality. The Fulltime 4WD is great in the snow and off road, coupled with the 1KZ engine this Van is very capable.

The van has new: Falkentire AT tires, Fuel Filter, Water Pump, Head Gasket, Cylinder Head, Air Filter, Oil Filter, and hoses in cooling system which has also been flushed.

Sold - Toyota Hiace 4wd Camper Van

The KZH138 long body style indicates that this is a longer wheelbase and high roof version of a standard Hiace van OEM from Toyota Factory. These are typically 10-passenger vans but this one has been converted into a fully functional camper. It has the coveted 1KZTE engine which is more suited for US roads than any other JDM vans available and is equipped with full-time 4wd. It has just under 80,000 verified miles on it, has been registered and on the roads in Japan up until winter, so there is no worry about fluids and components sitting for 25 years.

Seats 4, sleeps 3-4, includes heater, fridge, VHS player, sink, plenty of storage compartments, awning, removable table, privacy curtains, Working AC throughout van, slider windows, lots of seating options! There is very minimal rust, the interior is in excellent condition, the body has a couple dings but is overall in great shape. I have taken this from California to Utah and cruised all over the mountains here with no mechanical problems and no overheating.

Work done: Dobinson suspension, Roamer NW 2 inch lift, Falkentire Wildpeak AT tires, EGR delete, new battery, oil change, air filter and coolant flush.

This particular model is rare with the camper setup and have been seen for 29-40k in the US.

It’s hard to properly describe the uniqueness and rarity of this particular 4WD campervan. Back in the 90s, Toyota made awesome factory campers that were 100% in-house Toyota, designed and built by Toyota and no other – in Japan, for sale only in Japan. Finding one in the US is incredibly difficult, we know because it took us forever to find her. They are know to be trustworthy, bulletproof, incredible 4WD and snow machines and awesomely fuel efficient. We found her to be all of those things. And although we don't agree with the 'ugly' part, this article in Bloomberg News highlights how awesome these rigs are:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-20/ugly-is-a-selling-point-for-fans-of-these-tiny-japanese-vans

We are sad to say goodbye...Our trusty steed of a camper van is ready to move on to new adventures. She carried us steadily through the deserts of the southwest, the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, and the wild mountains of Montana for the last three years as we built our business working from the road, but she is now, with great dismay, looking for a new home.

Our near-term travel plans have us flying to places in Central America where we ought not drive, and planning a long-term sabbatical abroad, and sitting in the driveway unused is no place for a van like this.

And just what exactly is it? If you know camper vans, then you have certainly heard of Toyota's Hiace Cruising Cabin. A 4-Wheel drive diesel van with pop-top, she’s fully camperized with a new marine grade diesel heater, newly electrified as a nomadic work station, and as fuel efficient as you will find in the world of vans and campers (~22-27 mpg). And if driving on the wrong side of the vehicle, and turning heads everywhere you go isn’t enough to convince you, here’s a list of upgrades and highlights…

Upgrades:
-New engine (fully reconditioned) Toyota 3L (2.8Liter) shipped from Australia and installed locally in Bellingham February 2020 (inquire for full details on the reconditioning process)
-New water pump, timing belt, gaskets, etc (Feb 2020)
-Brand new custom, overbuilt radiator, and new transmission oil cooler installed Feb 2020 (the one knock on Hiaces is undersized radiators that makes them prone to overheat...not anymore!)
-New fuel injection pump (Fall 2018)
-We have a mechanic in Bellingham who is now a Toyota Hiace expert
-New Webasto diesel heater installed Fall 2018, with all marine grade components (installed by Pacific Marine here in Bellingham, the best of the best). It kept us warm on cold desert nights and DRY on cold, wet PNW nights.
-New solar charging system, including portable 100W flexible solar panel, isolated starter and house bank (brand new 4D deep cycle marine 198 amp hour, $800, April 2020) batteries, etc with all marine grade components (installed by Pacific Marine in Bellingham, WA, the best of the best)...We work from laptops on the road and required ample, consistent charging - this system worked great for our heavy use.

Drivetrain:
-2.8L 4 cylinder Diesel (3L model)
-Automatic with Overdrive
-Low and High range 4wd and locking hubs
-Extremely Fuel efficient - We got over 24mpg on a few tanks, and consistently get 21-22 mpg

Interior:
-Two rows of back seats - seat belts for 7 overall
-Sleeps 4 comfortably (two in the loft and two in the convertible bed down low), and possibly another kid or two with creativity
-Middle row seat rotates 180 to create a dinette with stowable table top
-Pop top gives you standing head room
-Tires in good shape (~10,000 miles), plus a spare set of studded snow tires (she does phenomenally well in the snow without the studded tires, and is a beast off road)
-Roof rack
-Propane stove with exterior canister storage can easily convert to run Coleman canisters or a mini propane tank (currently plumbed for Coleman).
-Sink - (we took the pump and spigot out, but it could easily be converted back)
-12V Fridge runs great, and even freezes in the upper “freezer” portion
-Awning keeps the sun off and the rain out to greatly expand your living space
-Curtains throughout
-Dual Zone A/C (it blew cold when we bought it, but now needs a new charge or further work/investigation)
-Dual zone Heat
-All interior lighting switched to LEDs
-New speakers front and rear
-Foam floor panels for comfort and added insulation
-New radio with bluetooth
-Tons of storage and well thought out hidey holes
-We also have a manual (in English!) and lots of parts numbers to save you time and headache

The Negatives:
-You’ve probably figured out by now that the original engine gave out...A broken fan clutch and the aforementioned undersized radiator led to overheating/engine damage. It was probably rebuildable, but the gamble of mechanic time on an open ended can of worms convinced us to go with the known quantity of a fully reconditioned engine.
-There are a few minor dents in the body that have minor rust and should be addressed
-Upholstery and pop top canvas is in decent shape, but by no means new and shiny
Comparable Sales:

Other comparable hiaces sales (though with original and not brand new engines, so not actually comparable) have recently sold for $30,000 and $32,000 respectively. All told, we’ve invested over $10,000 in material upgrades that you now don’t have to worry about. And it was the best money we’ve ever spent. Our time traveling the backroads in this van, sleeping in flat spots under the desert sky, miles from the nearest campground, has been the best time of our life. If you’ve read this far, you are a kindred soul who understands the value of solitude. And this is one of the best machines to get you there.

This van was imported in 2017 by Vanlife Northwest the leading importer and mechanic for these vehicles in the PNW. At the time it was imported it had all of the work below done to it. SOLD - 1991 Toyota Townace Camper 4x4

(CLICK PHOTOS TO SCROLL)

This Toyota Townace camper is equipped with the small but reliable 2c diesel engine. This little workhorse gets 20-25 mpg and loves to go slow and steady. It is a manual transmission with column shifting which is easy to drive if you know how to drive a stick-shift. Manual locking hubs and hi-lo range 4 wheel drive make this pretty capable on mild off-road terrain.

The camper can sleep 4 adults on the bunk bed platform with the top bunk being removable with the rack system. The wiring and electrical have been updated by a professional to provide reliable and safe usage. Included is blasting AC in the front, window curtains, a ceiling vent, refrigerator, sink, shower, place for a diesel heater, overhead storage, and more.

It has 38,000 miles on it and good amount of use. The engine and drivetrain are all in fantastic shape, there are a few spots of rust but nothing too crazy below or on the frame. The rust is the only reason I’m selling this well below what other campers normally are selling for. The windows on the camper have been resealed, new floor put in, refinished steel frames for seating and new wood / carpeting on frames, and new electrical redone. Flushed all fluids, and replaced some old belts but everything else has been great mechanically.

This thing is ready for road tripping and with a little bit of work and customizing to fit you, it’s an awesome little camper.
